About

Hi, I'm Woody, and I work primarily with oil and acrylic paints. Art has moved in and out of my life since my school days, but painting has always remained a constant pull. Creating is grounding for me — once I’m fully immersed in a painting, that focused, almost meditative space is where my mind and soul feel most at ease.

Much of my work is shaped by time spent in the Lake District, where I’ve hiked extensively and volunteered with Fix the Fells, helping to build and maintain stone pathways to reduce erosion. Being present in the landscape through all seasons and weather has had a lasting influence on my paintings. I’m particularly drawn to the Lake District’s dramatic skies — vast, shifting, and often unpredictable. Heavy cloud, breaking light, sudden storms and fleeting moments of calm all play a central role in my work, creating moody, atmospheric scenes that speak to both scale and emotion.

I paint at my studio at FaMAS, Falcon Mill in Bolton, surrounded by a community of painters and creative people whose energy I find both motivating and inspiring. While landscape remains at the heart of my practice, my inspiration now stretches further afield. I enjoy exploring narrative and atmosphere beyond place, most recently in my painting Let the Night Decide, and I look forward to developing new projects that continue to explore mood, light, and story.
