The Pigeon Tower - Original oil painting
The Pigeon Tower
Oil painting on canvas board, 20” x 16”, framed
Perched high above the Lancashire countryside, Rivington Pigeon Tower stands as a quiet sentinel of another age—its weathered stone and commanding silhouette steeped in history and atmosphere. This original oil painting captures the tower not simply as a structure, but as a presence: solitary, enduring, and subtly dramatic against the shifting skies of the West Pennine Moors.
This is an area I’ve hiked many times over the years, in all seasons and conditions, and it holds a strong personal connection. The familiar paths, the changing light, and the sense of openness have all shaped my experience of the landscape, and this painting reflects those memories as much as the physical setting itself.
Rather than presenting a literal depiction, the painting leans into mood and memory—suggesting the quiet isolation of the tower and its relationship with the land around it. There is a sense of timelessness here, where past and present blur, and the familiar landmark becomes something more evocative and personal.
This piece forms part of an ongoing exploration of local heritage and landscape, celebrating the character and understated beauty of places that are often overlooked, yet deeply rooted in the identity of the region.
